Florida Property Tax Issue Has No Easy Fix

Toolbox

I thought it was a joke at first…

The news item forwarded to me stating the legislature may do away with property taxes and raise our state sales tax didn’t seem to make sense. Just how would that help?

Unfortunately it’s no joke, and neither are any of the other proposals being floated on how to “fix” the Save Our Homes Amendment… or rather, the problems that amendment to the Florida state constitution has caused.

I think too many of these proposals fail to address the real problem… the inequity devised by Save Our Homes is the issue, and creating additional inequities may get the politicians in Tallahassee a year or two of kudos, but just like the original amendment, they all seem very short sighted and inequitable to me…

We all need to take a few steps backward and look at the purpose of the property tax again, otherwise I foresee only very wealthy people having the ability to move here as Floridians shift the tax burden of our infrastructure onto anyone else they can think of.
