Are you overpaying for windstorm insurance?
Newest Florida insurance buzzword: “mitigation”. Another one: “refund check”
What’s it mean? Essentially, it means reducing (or mitigating) the risk of your home falling apart during a hurricane.
Why is it important now? If you haven’t heard of a windstorm mitigation inspection, and you own a home in Florida, then you probably need one… a home inspector makes a special report on how your home is designed against the effects of high winds and hurricanes. Once you submit this report to your insurer, they are required to give you discounts on your policy based on the features of your home.

Do it. You could save THOUSANDS of dollars a year!
The mitigation inspection is also helpful in that it will identify any weaknesses in your home that you may wish to improve upon, such as gable end bracing, before the next storm.
If you’ve had a free home inspection as part of the My Safe Florida Home program, you should receive a mitigation report in addition to the inspection report. I had one earlier this year, the state sent me the mitigation form about a month ago, and I just found out from my helpful State Farm agent that I will be getting a big check in the mail.
So do it!
